WHETHER THE WEATHER IS FINE at Locarno Film Festival 2021

July 1, 2021

After an unordinary 2020 edition, the Locarno Film Festival returns once again to the Piazza Grande of the Swiss city; the 74th edition of the festival will be held from 4th to 14th August 2021.
We couldn’t miss the chance to have a #TFLFilm featured in a festival such as Locarno, well known for its dedication to art-house cinema.

Within the Concorso Cineasti del presente section - the place devoted to the discovery of tomorrow’s cinema - will be showcased WHETHER THE WEATHER IS FINE, the debut of the Philippine Carlo Francisco Manatad. As a FeatureLab participants 2017, the director together with the producer Armi Rae Cacanindin benefited from individual sessions with various experts of the main areas of filmmaking like scriptwriting, directing, cinematography, sound, post-production, but also of production, financing & sales, and audience engagement; on top of that the project was awarded the TFL Co-Production Award 2017 (€ 50.000). The film is produced by Cinematografica, planc., Quantum Films, House on Fire, Dreamscape Entertainment, Globe Studios, Blacksheep, AAND Company, KawanKawan Media, Weydemann Bros., CMB Films.

The plot unfolds in the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan when religious fanatics, desperados, criminals and fleeing animals are loose in the city. Miguel, a desperate son but caged all his life by his inner demons, roams the ruins in search of the two women in his life: his friend Andrea and his mother, Norma. As soon as he finds these two, Miguel tries to convince them to leave the unliveable city. As Miguel’s time slowly runs out as another rumor of an incoming storm resurfaces, he must decide whether to stay on to persuade his loved ones or to leave town on his own before the next disastrous storm devours him and the only home he knows.

We are also happy to spot various alumni, whose new projects will be screened in Locarno.
Together with WEATHER THE WEATHER IS FINE there will be a fellow TFL alumnus, Mehdi Hmili (Interchange 2012) with his feature film Streams.

Competing for the Pardo d’oro we have Bertrand Mandico (FrameWork 2008) with After Blue (Paradis sale) and Edwin (FrameWork 2009) with Vengeance Is Mine, All Others Pay Cash.

In Open Doors Screenings there will be Kamila Andini (FeatureLab 2018) with The Seen and Unseen, while Open Doors Short will feature Mountain Cat by Lkhagvadulam Purev-Ochir, former ScriptLab participant 2019 and currently a member of the FeatureLab class of 2021 with her project ZE.

Speaking of short films, within the section Pardi di domani will be possible to watch Il Faut Fabriquer Ses Cadeaux by Cyril Schäublin (FeatureLab 2019) and Penalty Shot by Rok Biček (TFL Extended 2019).

Finally, as pointed out by the Artistic Director Giona A. Nazzaro “Our hope is that the films we have picked will offer the curious, enthusiastic, open-minded and the casual viewer some clues to a world (of images, cinema, film industry) still finding its feet and equipping itself to face the next century in its history”. We are sure they will.
