Two #TFLFilms among the Berlinale 2021 winners!

March 5, 2021

We are very thrilled for the two #TFLfilms awarded during the 71st edition of the Berlin International Film Festival.

The Silver Bear for Best Director went to Dénes Nagy for his film NATURAL LIGHT. The film was developed within AdaptLab in 2016 (a former TFL programme dedicated to non-original screenplays) and FeatureLab in 2017 and it’s based on the novel of Pál Závada and is set during World War II, occupied Soviet Union.

The jury stated: "Appalling and beautifully shot, mesmerising images, remarkable direction and a masterful control of every aspect of the craft of filmmaking, a narration that transcends its historical context. A portrait of war in which the observant gaze of the director reminds us again of the need to choose between passivity and taking individual responsibility."

Furthermore, the Special Jury Award in the Encounters section went to TASTE, directed by the Vietnamese filmmaker Lê Bảo. The film participated in FeatureLab 2017 and was financed by the TFL Co-Production Award 2017 (€ 50.000).

In this case, the jury stated: "A fearlessly clear, composed and choreographic abstraction of social relations, using very concrete building blocks – slum architecture, football rules, cooking, the weight of human bodies – to construct a field of tensions, as stable as it is nervous, between a type of ascetic emancipation and dystopic regression."

Congratulations guys, we are over the moon!
